This is but one of the things that my daughter and I get up to strengthen that bond between us - by wearing kiddy rings together when we go out.

Call me a spin doctor if you may ... but I find that there are so many things that I can teach my daughter even in the choice of our jewellery.

... How yellow and purple are complementary colours because they are on the opposite end of the colour wheel. Although they are not in the same warm or cool family, they serve to make each other shine when placed together. The fascinating thing is that my daughter gets it.

... How I found the purple butterfly ring for her at the Cannes airport when I nearly gave up after going into shops at the legendary luxury strip and found nothing suitable. Good things do come to those who wait.

... How I kept this yellow shamrock ring from my grandmother despite being at an age where everything had to be cool and silver and looked like something that AXL Rose would wear. It's not about the glitter and the precious stones - it's about preserving a memory so that even a little thing can transport you back to another time.

In this day of living in excess, I find the latter one of the most important lesson that we can impart to our kids. Gone are the days where we had to share duo stick double-choc-fudge ice cream (can anyone find me a picture of that??? it looks something like THIS but flatter and is all chocolate) and got 50 cents for pocket money. Making sure that Shea appreciate the little things becomes an arduous undertaking when she is surrounded by doting grown ups.

To quote one of my all time favourite slogans from a watchmaker ... "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation." This is beginning to make more sense as I have started to apply it to not just material objects but to my daughter as well - I do not really own her ... I am also making sure that my grandchild gets a good mother.
